This is one of
the drills I like to use at the end of the practice with my
goaltenders instead of the normal skating drills the whole
team usually does. The drill will work well for conditioning
while it uses the elements of the game goalie needs and therefore
it serves multiple purposes and is more game like.
The drill execution
- Coach lines
up x number of pucks to both circles and to the middle where
he is positioned.
- Drill starts
with the shot from the coach
- Goalie then
skates as fast as he can to the first puck on the circle
on his right and executes a diving poke check
- Quick recovery
and backward skating back to the net
- Coach shoots
another puck just when the goalie is getting back and gives
him a chance to make a save
- Goalie repeats
the quick skating and diving poke check to the other circle
- Drill continues
until goalie has cleared all the pucks from circles
- I usually use
3 or 4 pucks on both circles
This is a hard
drill when goalie executes it with full speed.
Remember to do
it at the end of the practice, preferably as the last drill.
This video was
shot Oct 7.2002 at Jokerit, Helsinki goalie practice. Goaltender
in the drill is Kari Lehtonen.
